Great article. I get pissed off daily by similar episodes. However, do a little research into ‘fair’ trade. It sounds all fluffy and nice, and in places it is, but it is a form of protectionism and in many cases traps people in poverty. It also removes any incentive to improve the product, and if anyone has tasted ‘fair’ trade tea they will know what I mean. Like so much,it doesn’t do what it says on the tin. JD.

Fairtrade is a con. It oppresses third world farmers and disqualifies them from advancing their farminng methods or productivity levels.

Just another method by which charidees justify their own existence.

And talking of supermarkets, fairtrade and being ripped off, your average supermarket sells 100g bar of fairtrade chocolate for around £1.25. My local fairtrade shop sells the same for £1.99. This is the shop of the fairtrade organisation itself. It must have really low overheads, staffed by volunteers, and no doubt paying no rates. So what’s all that about then?

FFS Fairtrade is good. And if Sainsburys have made their own brand tea fairtrade, that’s good too. There is no negative side to this.

Well said Mr. C. It takes courage to stand up against a supposed charity event. Red Nose Day is just a load of attention seeking pseudo celebs saying “look me at me, I’m such a nice and caring person.”. It also panders to the ignorant tossers who give their annual £5 and think they’re actually making a worthwhile contribution. And here’s a candidate for number 11 on your list, a way to help people that shouldn’t even cost you a penny:

Personally, I hate awards ceremonies. All that backslapping and mutual admiration, and crocodile tears whilst the recipient thanks their mum, dad, brother, sister, strange uncle Jimmy who dresses in a tutu, etc.

But I had to laugh at the reports this morning expressing outrage that ColdPlay didn’t win anything. Probably because there is no Band Most Up Its Own Arse award.
